FIRST PLACE

WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONS, TIBET, CHINA

By Xiangxue Zheng

Two kids carrying boxes of material for their family. In Tibet, children from poor families are expected to take on more household chores from an early age.

SECOND PLACE

UNTITLED

By Luke Borman

Two ships approach the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull, part of Vatnajökull, in Iceland. Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier, but it is shrinking rapidly due to climate change. The water in the picture is a lagoon that started forming only 60 years ago from the glacier's meltwater. The lagoon is growing very quickly as the glacier melts and is reportedly already the deepest lake in the country.

THIRD PLACE

FARMERS AT THE END OF THE DAY

By Samantha Evelyn Bolte

Khai Kalan, Pakistan- Farmers unwind differently depending on land ownership status of their families. The gentleman in the back in green sits on the floor due to his family’s lack of land ownership. The other men sit in chairs, an amenity that comes with landownership in the region.

FOURTH PLACE

UNTITLED

By Peter Martin Sies

The photos all come from Antananarivo and the outskirts of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The country is one of the poorest in the world. It's South has been and is facing famine for decades. Famine disasters are increasing in intensity due to climate change induced droughts, which jeopardize scarce resources. The harsh social reality in the country is felt everywhere, as the poverty rate is high across the country.

I was in Madagascar for an internship with a German development policy foundation, called Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. My time in Madagascar was very moving. Antananarivo is the most vivid city i have seen in my life. I have become very fond of the city, as I was lucky to meet many incredibly friendly and loving people. At the end of my stay almost all Malagasy people told me not to forget their country. The feeling of abandonment is very understandable. The country contributes zero to climate change, is among the first to be affected, and receives little help. There is a danger that in the midst of growing geopolitical tensions, the country, which already receives far too little attention from the international community, will be pushed further into the background.

FIFTH PLACE

PEPPERCORNS

By Abigail Moses

Kampot Province, Cambodia.

Outside of the global capitalist market, these peppercorns are ethically grown and sold fairly within the Kampot community. They bring 'spice' to the local cuisine, literally!

FINALISTS

UNTITLED

By Luke Borman

A bulldozer sits on a newly-cleared lot, with Arenal Volcano in the background, in Costa Rica. Despite Costa Rica's many efforts to preserve its ecosystem, deforestation is still a problem as private, forested land is cleared to make room for agriculture. However in recent years, the government has successfully been implementing a reforestation program to reverse the damages.

SEA OF MASKS, CHERNOBYL, UKRAINE

By Xiangxue Zheng

A lonely doll is sitting on a chair, swaying on a sea of masks. After the Chornobyl disaster, tons of radiative masks were abandoned in Pripyat City.

PROMISES OF PROGRESS

By Vivian Eng Bendewald

Like farm animals grazing, these three cement mixers stood in an empty field reminding passersby that perhaps progress was coming. Regardless, the very real social need to find a life partner did not escape this progress or grazing trio, the trough of the cement mixer on the right has a message written in red that was an advertisement for matchmaking.
